It exported the whole account.

I have just tried this and it works for me.

I am wondering if on the date selection page, you changed the date selection to "Select Range" but did not change the radio buttons underneath, by default the radio button for "Earliest" is still selected but you probably wanted "Choose Date"

Maybe the date selection needs to become active only then the radio button changes.

Yes, you are right. 
Selecting the radio button solved it. 

But why can you select a date when the radio button is not selected like in all the report options?!?

Because this is a UI usability bug and will be fixed for 3.11.
