Description Tommy Trussell 2019-11-09 02:00:11 EST
The Account portion of the Budget window does not provide a way to display the Account Code column or sort the accounts in Account Code order as you can in the main GnuCash Accounts tab. This makes it difficult to match and conform to "legacy" budgets and reports based upon account numbers.

The work-around is to prepend the account code to the beginning of the account name. Unfortunately this "breaks up" textual data-entry selections of the accounts by interposing the number into the account name. If your account names were prepended with the entire common four- or five-digit account codes, the account names would become noticeably longer and more cumbersome.

[None of the Budget reports provide an option to display or sort by the Account Codes. As of GnuCash 3.7, I count only five GnuCash reports that include an option to display Account Codes.]

Tommy: Account codes haven't been as popular nor requested by many users.

We can add account-code display and sorting in the *regular* budget report?

Yes, having the codes in the regular budget report would help a bit, HOWEVER if you can't use them everywhere in the same format (in this case, sorted by code) it makes it hard to navigate.

Frankly, this is my first time to try to actually USE budgets, and I have several more odd bugs, some so big either nobody actually uses budgets OR (more likely?) I am going about this all wrong.

Please file any bug that bothers you. We cannot guarantee fixing them all but gives an idea what direction to push the code forward.

The budget report is actually quite old.

The report generation *could* be upgraded, modelled on the Multicolumn Balance Sheet by reusing the latter table builder, but some aspects (eg account-depth setting) not 100% guaranteed compatible yet, hence I cannot (and IMNSHO no one else can) upgrade budget report to sort & display account codes.

In other words, I can transform budget report to a format I'm more familiar with, but may lose compatibility for the account-depth setting.

Hopefully in 4.0 you will be able to add the account code column and hence sort on it in the budget view, just testing my change.

This will be possible in version 4.0
