All, I'm trying to use the Advanced portfolio report to determine unrealized gains in currency trading. Unfortunately, the report is available only for stock accounts. Selecting a currency account in report settings does nothing. Is there a way to create that report for currency accounts - or a good reason why this is disabled? Thanks! - Stefan
gnc is not a suitable platform for currency trading unless you're taking a view over days or months. it simply doesn't have the necessary precision required for intra day or similar short term trading. I think this is a user list issue not a bug, not even a dev issue. if this was a song I'd say: Return to sender https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU5xxh5UX4U in buglist terms I'd mark it as done because the reporter shouldn't have been using the Advanced Portfolio Report for this in the first place. There is a way to record currency trades in gnc, but you need to understand what you are doing first.
further, realised and unrealised gains are a tax issue rather than an absolute in accounting, if we get started on that we'll be here for years.
(In reply to Wm from comment #1) > gnc is not a suitable platform for currency trading unless you're taking a > view over days or months. it simply doesn't have the necessary precision > required for intra day or similar short term trading. I never stated that I want to do intraday trading. In fact I do want to take a view on months (once per year, actually). So I don't see the point why I should not want to use a report to let gnc calculate gains and losses for me.
gnc has no inherent calculation for gains or losses over time. in case the distinction is not clear, it has calculations for gains and losses, but not over time and only for some purposes. as i said above, this is mainly because most people think of gains and losses as tax related. and tax stuff is jurisdiction specific. there are a number of well understood financial sums that could be applied but these are not on the radar of the dev people at the moment. they have other issues to deal with :( === if you want to translate currency accounts to virtual stock accounts I do that a lot. I have certainly posted about it in the public lists, I don't check if they get published or not so you can ask here gain if you get stuck. don't expect a quick answer. gnc dump my messages so I only check occasionally.
Stefan, Sorry for the delay answering. The Advanced Portfolio Report was written by someone (Mike Alexander) who trades stocks, not Forex, and he wrote the report with that in mind. I've CC'd him as he's the best one to answer the question about whether the report would work with currency accounts.
John, thanks for taking this up again. Actually, I'm not "trading" currencies (for the sake of gaining money from that) - I just happen to use foreign currencies occasionally on private/business trips. Nevertheless, for the sake of completeness I'd like to track and/or review gains and losses, even though it usually boils down to negligible amounts. This is not a high priority item for me, but from what I understood so far, the Advanced portfolio report should provide me exactly what I'd like to see and it seems like a very minor configuration to enable it for currencies as well - for someone knowledgeable in that report scripting language, which I'm certainly not...
