I think this change has happened since 3.4 (definitely happening in the 2019-01-14 nightly for Windows). In the versions prior, it was possible to initiate a text search just by typing text while the lists were visible. This was great in the Scheduled Transactions list, as well as Since Last Run window, when trying to navigate to a transaction considering they are not sorted in any particular order. I found the easy search (acts like type-to-search in Firefox browser) very convenient and, likewise, the lack of it extremely debilitating while navigating through some 150 scheduled transactions. Hence it would be great to have it back, if possible. Thanks!
Oh, I see https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=796938 #796938 Could be the same issue. I just noticed in the two windows listed above.

Except that you are reporting this on Windows while bug 796938 deals with an issue in a MacOS specific Gtk component. Maybe the same issue has been introduced in Gtk's Windows counterpart ?
For the record it still works fine on Fedora 29...
Thanks for the info! I was afraid it had also disappeared from the Linux version. At least I should be able to use it on the home PC.
Interestingly, ctrl+F brings it back! Cursor up/down can then be used to navigate through the matching elements. This only works in the Since Last Run window since this shortcut is used for the "real" search in Accounts or Scheduled Transactions windows. It means that the functionality is there but some default activation-on-type setting is missing.
