Description David Carlson 2013-12-16 16:37:14 EST
If I open the General Ledger view then use Ctrl-F to search the general ledger for, say, text in the description field, the search works but the results appear in the General Ledger window instead of appearing in a separate window like searches from other register windows.

Then it is impossible to 'undo' the search to the previous date settings to see the stuff that was filtered out. Closing the General Ledger window and opening a new General ledger window is the only work-around.

Related to this bug is the fact that there is no visible indication of the fact that the current view is the result of a search or of the criteria used to execute the search. Thus there is no visible clue that there may be many transactions 'missing' from the current view.

I am testing the December 15 nightly Windows build in a Windows XP virtual machine.

Confirmed.

When I test the same on GnuCash 2.4.13, the same behaviour can be observed. I'll remove the version number from the bug title as that could mistakenly be interpreted as if this was a regression somewhere.

I just tested this again on release 2.6.4-2 for windows and it is still there. Thus you could say that it is not new any more...
Comment 3 Mike Evans 2014-10-21 04:52:44 EDT
In Bugzilla it's marked as NEW until it's ASSIGNED, RESOLVED or NEEDINFO. None of those apply hence still NEW.

I had tongue in cheek in comment 2 because this bug has languished for nearly a year. I do see that that while the version number has been removed from the title, the bug is still filed under release 2.5.x, which may be why it is languishing, as I doubt that it would be very hard to fix.

This error also occurs on GNU/Linux. I reproduced using 14.04. I verified that other registers open a new "search results" register, leaving the original in tact.

"I doubt that it would be very hard to fix."

I doubt your doubt ;-)

In my very minimal experience, the General Ledger seems to be treated "specially" from the other registers, and it's almost always a bad thing (resulting in anomalies like this). Rectifying that seems like it will have somewhat far-reaching ramifications.

Lmat, perhaps you are right.

My thoughts were along the line that there is already code to open a new General Ledger window, so I thought that the fix might be almost as simple as choosing a different entry point into that part of the code.

However, the search results windows in general have some failings including not showing the search criteria that were used to create them, so those issues should be addressed at the same time anyway imho, and I do agree that part would not be so easy.

I have pushed a change to open the search results for the General Ledger in a separate search register page and will be in version 4.3. The search criteria is a different enhancement and as such be a separate bug.
